How to Verify 1-D Codes

1D code examples

ISO 15416 verifies 1-D label-based codes

Most barcodes today are 1-D, such as the UPC codes found on consumer products. To successfully verify 1-D codes, it is important to understand their type and size, as well as their industry-related and international verification standards. The GS1 application standard is typical for generic barcodes, while the international ISO standard is ISO 15416. Only a barcode verifier equipped with the lighting, optics, and software to comply with ISO barcode quality standards will be able to grade 1-D codes accurately. Software and barcode readers alone are not sufficient. Field of view, minimum x-dimension, lighting angle, format, and software capabilities are all important considerations when selecting a barcode verifier for 1-D codes.

Lighting Angle

To comply with the ISO 15415 standard, a 45-degree lighting angle must be used to verify barcodes printed on flat surfaces.

Field of View

How big is the largest barcode being printed? A barcode verifier needs a field of view that is large enough to fit a 1-D barcode and still leave enough space to meet the quiet zone requirements specific to that symbol type.

Minimum X-Dimension

How small is the smallest element (bar or space) in the code? This measurement is the minimum x-dimension. A verifier must be able to accommodate a code’s minimum x-dimension; otherwise, the camera resolution will not be able to properly capture the image needed to perform the verification.

Verifier Style

For 1-D codes on products that vary in shape and size, a verifier with the ability to adjust the camera height to the proper focus is useful. An adjustable height is also ideal for 1-D codes that are printed on a recessed portion of a part. For large barcodes or labels with multiple barcodes that need to be verified at the same time, a desktop “box” style verifier with a field of view up to six inches wide is recommended.

Software Capabilities

When judging the software component of a barcode verifier, make sure it has the functionality to grade and diagnose issues within the barcode printing process. Things to consider include whether the user interface is easy to use, generates reports, grades against ISO 15416, and shows data formatting errors.
