Conformance Standards and Calibration

verification calibration cards

Barcode verifiers must be calibrated to traceable standards

Calibration cards help ensure the proper operation of a barcode verifier and are important for industry standard compliance.

Barcode verifiers must be calibrated to traceable standards. The calibration process adjusts the brightness of the image and therefore is not specific to the symbology. Conformance Calibration cards contain symbols with intentional imperfections that are used to check the reporting capabilities of the verifier and document conformance to industry standards such as ISO/IEC 15415, ISO/IEC 15416, and GS1 specifications. Calibration cards expire two years from the issue date.

For 2-D verifiers, you can choose either a “2-D Calibration Card” or a “Linear Calibration Card”. Either of them will allow you to calibrate the reflectance levels. Importantly, calibration is not specific to the symbology and once the verifier is calibrated using either type of calibration target, the verifier is calibrated for both 1-D and 2-D barcodes. However, for 1-D verifiers, only a “1-D Calibration barcode” can be used.

Periodic calibration is necessary to account for changes in the environment. Ambient light and temperature are typical environmental conditions that frequently change. Electrical components also drift (change characteristics) over time, and this can affect the accuracy of measurements made by a verifier.
