A Flooring Solution That Doesn’t Fall Flat

One flooring manufacturer suffered from quality issues related to the warping and grading of its product prior to packaging. Scanning floorboards for surface defects and warp required scanning both the top and bottom of each plank. In response, the OEM selected the In-Sight 3D-L4000 smart camera with In-Sight software tools to inspect floorboards.

The In-Sight 3D-L4000 with In-Sight software made it easy to set up the 3D Plane tool and other tools. During flooring inspection, operators were quickly able to pull up a true 3D image and select the underlying conveyor. The system generated height information for every pixel both above and below the reference plane — a useful tool for detecting warped boards.

Programming the In-Sight 3D-L4000 was simple with the intuitive spreadsheet format used by the In-Sight software. The easy-to-use programming environment enabled technicians and operators to monitor, manage, and maintain complex tools with minimal training.

Since its installation at the flooring manufacturer, the In-Sight 3D-L4000 has continuously inspected floorboards for defects and surface quality — all from a compact, easy-to-install footprint. Additionally, the easy-to-use and easy-to-customize software provided the manufacturer with flexibility for future inspection requirements and applications.

Machine Vision Solutions for Every Application and Skill-Level

The In-Sight 3D-L4000 delivers high-quality images with 2K resolution at up to a 4 kHz scan rate. This new 3D scanner also includes a patented speckle-free blue laser optic system. It can detect 3D defects like bumps and dents on floorboard surfaces. This optical design has several benefits, including eye safe operation while delivering more light to the surface than competing solutions, more accurate 3D point clouds for measurements, and the ability to measure 100% of the In-Sight 3D-L4000’s field of view even if up to 50% of the laser is blocked by debris. This last benefit is an unprecedented achievement in 3D laser scanning, which normally limits the designer’s option to mount the scanner upside down because of concerns about debris blocking the laser light.

Linear scanners such as the In-Sight 3D-L4000 scanning engine are well-positioned for inspecting long products such as flooring. The camera’s compact design is easily integrated into new or existing lines, while the In-Sight software has been upgraded to handle 2D and true 3D measurements. In addition, the improved 3D point cloud system is superior to the traditional 2D height maps generated by competing solutions.
