Order fulfillment operations rely on efficiency to keep processing costs down. Many automated fulfillment systems use totes to convey picked orders to the packaging stations. Optimizing this process means maximizing tote utilization, which attempts to present full totes to packaging operators to maximize their productivity. Underfilled totes translate to an inefficient operation. Traditional sensor systems often calculate the fill capacity based on the tallest object in the tote which may not be accurate if there is plenty of space around that object for additional orders.
The Cognex 3D-A1000 dimensioning system, which features a 3D and 2D camera system, helps maximize tote capacity within the order fulfillment process by calculating each tote’s fill capacity and comparing it to an established target capacity. This solution helps operators become more efficient as they can pack more orders before servicing the next tote.
Using symbolic 3D technology, the 3D-A1000 calculates the fill volume of the tote and forwards the data to the control system and if the tote does not meet a minimum volume, the tote is re-routed to have additional orders added to it. Built-in versatile tools enable the customer to set the correct tote parameters, such as shape and thickness so accurate volumes are calculated regardless of variations in the tote. The 3D-A1000 also captures 2D images of those totes that have questionable results which the operations team can use to identify possible process issues.
