GS1 DataBar Stacked
A GS1 DataBar is a high density bar code that's designed to fit a large amount of information into a smaller amount of space than a regular UPC bar code. A single, regular GS1 DataBar can hold up to 14 digits. An Extended GS1 DataBar can hold even more. A GS1 DataBar Stacked consists of two GS1 bar codes piled on top of one another, in order to pack more consecutive information into a small, square space. This type of stacked code is typically used in supermarkets, in order to include more information on smaller packages, such as on produce.
Specifications: Each GS1 bar code in the stack has its own coding, consisting of a left guard character, several data character sections, interspersed with finder patterns, a check digit, and a right guard character. Whereas an individual GS1 DataBar can only encode limited alphanumeric characters, a stacked one combines the information in the two codes to allow it to encode any ASCII character.
Advantages: The stacking of the codes makes the GS1 DataBar Stacked more versatile and allows it to encode a larger amount of information within a smaller space than most other bar codes. It also includes a check digit to guard against errors.
Disadvantages: It's less space efficient than a single GS1 DataBar. And the amount of information you can encode is still limited.
