After cigarette packs are assembled, they are grouped into cigarette cartons, or bundles, that typically contain 10 individual packs. The cigarette cartons are wrapped in clear plastic and a label is applied to one end that includes a 1D and 2D code with serialized data of the individual packs inside. These codes are generally clearly printed in black on a white label and are traveling at a relatively low speed making them easy to read.

However, it is essential that these codes are read with 100% accuracy to track and trace tobacco across the supply chain and avoid unwanted waste. The unique codes on individual packs are expensive to produce, so if carton codes are missed or mis-read, the entire cigarette carton is rejected. Each of the unique codes on the cigarette packs must then be destroyed and deleted from the database.
