True 3D Vision Tools for Improved Accuracy and Ease of Use

Traditionally, machine vision systems have inspected objects by reducing the three-dimensional “real world” to a two-dimensional flat image. However, for many applications, height information must also be considered. True 3D vision tools solve this shortcoming by generating fully-rendered 3D point clouds that capture width, length, and height information.

This paper discusses the benefits of using true 3D vision, over 2D images or 2.5D height maps, in inspection applications including:

  • Fewer false positives/negatives
  • Ability to address a broader range of parts and shapes
  • Improved operational efficiency
  • Streamlined training and faster deployment
