2D machine vision is used for four primary applications: guidance, inspection, gauging, and identification. With 2D vision, a digital camera captures an image of an object. From this image, a two-dimensional map is generated by interpreting variations in intensity, or contrast. 2D vision can be implemented in one of two ways: area scan or line scan. Area scan takes a single, complete picture of the entire area under inspection, while line scan compiles a 2D image line-by-line. 2D vision is especially useful in situations with high contrast or when texture or color of an object is critical to the solution.
