Cigarettes are assembled by wrapping and gluing tipping paper around the loose tobacco to form the cigarette shape. These sticks are then cut in half down the middle to make two cigarettes of equal size. Tobacco manufacturers must ensure the tipping paper is aligned correctly, so all the cigarettes are cut to the same length. If cut incorrectly, the sticks will be rejected, causing unwanted waste. This application can be challenging since the cigarettes are traveling at high speed and the cigarette machines are extremely compact and dimly lit.
Cognex’s In-Sight 2000 vision sensor ensures cigarettes are cut to the exact specifications. Using the edge detection tool, the In-Sight 2000 locates each end of the cigarette tipping paper and identifies the mid-point where the stick should be cut. The In-Sight 2000 has a compact form factor which allows it to be mounted into the tight spaces in the cigarette machine. It also features powerful integrated lighting that provides necessary illumination, plus multiple lens options with large fields of view to acquire high resolution images at close working range.
