Given the significance of barcodes in tracking and serialization, their quality must be monitored to ensure readability across the entire supply chain, under a wide range of viewing conditions, with a variety of barcode readers. To guarantee readability and be compliant with UDI labeling guidelines, barcodes must be tested and graded in a process separate from scanning and reading.
Verification is a regulated grading process that follows the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards to assess the print and marking quality of a barcode. A barcode verifier is the only device that can assign an objective quality grade to a code and generate an official quality report. Using the corresponding ISO standard determined by the symbology type and marking process, a series of quality parameters are used to determine a barcode’s overall quality grade.
Barcode grading has traditionally been done offline by taking sample packages to a lab environment with specific lighting and camera setup, to manually perform a series of quality tests. This slows down production and can miss a slow degradation of a printer.
