Communicating the Data In a Multiple Code Reading Application

For the past month or so I talked about the top considerations you must make when purchasing a barcode reader for multiple code reading applications. So far we decided that a barcode reader must be able to: 1) read any barcode or set of codes, every time; 2) set up easily; and 3) control the data output. The final topic is about communications.

4. Communication

You now have data formatted the way you want. It’s in the right order, has the proper delimiters defined and you’ve checked the data. So how do you send it to your control center? The most efficient method is via Ethernet. Choose a solution that can communicate with your PC or PLC without complexity—one that supports the most typical industrial networking standards such as EtherNet/IP (with Rockwell® Add On Profile (AOP)), PROFINET (with Siemens® GSD), Modbus/TCP, SLMP (Seamless Message Protocol), TCP/IP, etc.

The way we handle this is to utilize the Cognex Connect™ communications suite of Industrial Ethernet protocols. This capability ensures a seamless and reliable communications link between Cognex DataMan fixed-mount and handheld barcode readers and the factory network.

I hope these posts will help you the next time you need to solve a complex multiple code reading application
